Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 – SM8650, codenamed Lanai or Pineapple, is set to become the next flagship chip from Qualcomm, with an expected release date in late 2023. I have obtained information about the chip’s CPU configuration, which includes 2 “silver” cores codenamed Hayes (A5xx), 3 “gold” cores codenamed Hunter (A7xx), 2 “titanium” cores codenamed Hunter (A7xx), and 1 “gold+” core codenamed Hunter ELP (Xn). The “titanium” cluster is a new addition to Qualcomm’s chip lineup, and while it is unclear how it differs from the “gold” cluster, the software distinguishes them clearly.
The new cores, Hayes and Hunter (ELP), are unannounced and will replace the current lineup. They have dropped support for 32-bit architecture, making the 8 Gen 3 chip 64-bit only. Qualcomm’s code confirms this.
In addition to the CPU configuration, I have also learned that the chip will feature an Adreno 750 GPU, which is an upgrade from the Adreno Gen 7.2.0 found on the 8 Gen 2 chip. The maximum frequency of the GPU is currently set to 770 MHz, but this may change on future revisions of the chip.
Finally, it is expected that the 8 Gen 3 chip will run on the Linux kernel 6.1 with Android 14.
Overall, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 – SM8650 appears to be a promising addition to Qualcomm’s chip lineup, featuring new CPU cores and a powerful GPU. Its release in late 2023 is highly anticipated.
