Apple’s iPhone 15 is still months away from its official launch, but we have some exciting news to share today. Just a week later, we published an exclusive rendering of the CAD file-based iPhone 15 Pro, and we managed to get access to 3D CAD files of the iPhone 15 that reveal some of the design changes and features Apple plans to bring to its next smartphone. Renderer Ian Zelbo turned these CAD files into the beautiful images you can see below.
In one of the most significant changes, bangs will be ditched in favor of Dynamic Islands. A feature introduced last year on iPhone 14 Pro models, it consists of oval cutouts at the top of the screen that hide the front-facing camera and Face ID sensor.
Dynamic islands appear to be extending to all four iPhone models, as Apple is unlikely to choose to use outdated technology on the larger size of its latest flagship phone.
Another change we found in the CAD file is that the iPhone 15 will finally use USB-C as its charging port. Many users have been asking for this for years because USB-C is more versatile and compatible than Lightning. USB-C can also support faster charging and data transfer speeds than Lightning.
Apple seems to be keeping the classic dual-camera setup of the standard iPhone. The third camera and LiDAR still seem to work only on Pro iphones.
Apple has been using USB-C on its MacBooks and ipads for some time, but it has resisted using USB-C on iphones until now. One possible reason for the change is that Apple wants to comply with new European rules requiring smartphone makers to use a common standard for chargers across devices.
The CAD documents also show that the iPhone 15 will have a new display size of 6.2 inches, which is slightly larger than most recent base iphones, except of course for the iPhone 14 Plus and 14 Pro Max. The display resolution and refresh rate are unclear, but we expect them to be similar to the iPhone 14 models.
One thing we found missing from the CAD files are capacitive buttons, which are rumored to be coming to certain iPhone models this year. However, it looks like the capacitive button will only work on this year’s iPhone 15 Pro models, as the iPhone 15 still has physical buttons, just like every iPhone before it.
These are some of the big changes and features we found in the CAD files for the iPhone 15. Of course, these documents aren’t final — we don’t have any information about the iPhone 15’s price, color, or specs yet — but we’ll update you as soon as we hear more.
