Apple unveils new 14-inch MacBook Pro with M5 chip: more performance, same design

Apple today officially updated the base 14-inch MacBook Pro with a new M5 ChipThe chip is also used in the latest iPad Pro and Vision Pro models.

M5 Chip Completely Upgraded: Performance Improvement and Efficiency Go Hand in Hand
The new M5 continues to feature a 10-core CPU, 10-core GPU, and 16-core neural engine, but with even better performance than the previous generation M4 chip. Apple says the M5 chip delivers up to 20% of CPU performance boost in some tasks, such as code compilation, and up to 1.6x GPU performance boost in specialized graphics applications.
In addition, the M5 chip's memory bandwidth has been increased from 120GB/s to 153GB/s, further enhancing data transfer and multitasking capabilities.

The exterior design remains the same, still a familiar professional flagship
On the outside, the new MacBook Pro Base Edition continues the design of its predecessor, featuring a 14-inch Liquid Retina XDR display with support for up to 1,000 nits of SDR brightness and 1,600 nits of HDR peak brightness. Ports include three Thunderbolt 4 ports, HDMI, an SD card slot, a 3.5mm headphone jack, and a MagSafe 3 magnetic charging port. The keyboard remains a backlit Magic Keyboard with Touch ID fingerprint recognition keys.

More storage options, longer battery life
The new 14-inch MacBook Pro Base Edition offers storage options up to 4TB (previously capped at 2TB) and memory is still capped at 32GB, and Apple says the model still offers up to 24 hours of battery life for the mobile workforce of professional users.

Pricing and Availability
The 14-inch MacBook Pro with M5 chip is available for pre-order now and will go on sale Wednesday, October 22nd. The U.S. version starts at 1599 dollars.It comes standard with 16GB of unified RAM and 512GB of storage, and is available in Silver and Deep Sky Black color schemes.

High-end version expected in early 2026
The update does not yet include the high-end 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro models with the M5 Pro and M5 Max chips. Apple says the two more powerful models are expected to arrive in early 2026.

While the update doesn't bring a cosmetic refresh, the new MacBook Pro will continue to be the preferred choice of professional creators and high-performance mobile workers, thanks to the overall performance improvements of the M5 chip.
