Apple headset doesn't require an iPhone to work with it

According to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, Apple's first mixed reality headset could feature "over-the-air" typing and work independently without an accompanying iPhone. The device could reportedly be set up without an accompanying iPhone and download the user's content, including iCloud data, independently. Transferring data from the user's iPhone during setup would be an option, not required.

Gurman said "typing in the air" is Apple's method of using eye movements and gestures for text input on its devices.

Apple plans to unveil the first headset, likely to be called "Reality Pro," at WWDC in June, with the device set to ship as early as the end of 2023, and the company is also working on a number of other models for the future, including a cheaper model and a second-generation Reality Pro headset. The company is also working on a variety of other headphone models for the future, including a cheaper model, possibly called the "Reality One," and a second-generation Reality Pro headset.

The second-generation Reality Pro headset focuses on performance improvements, and may feature a variant of the M3 or M4 chip to enhance its graphics capabilities. While the first-generation model will include the M2 chip as well as a secondary chip for AR and VR processing, it's clearly not enough to output the graphics Apple wants. FaceTime, for example, will only support real VR representations of only two people at a time, not everyone on a conference call.
